Ride the Tram to Autumn Mountain

Autumn Mountain becomes available after destroying the Red Streamer. To get there, go to the tram at Overlook Mountain and speak with the Toad who operates it. On the tram ride you'll meet Bob-omb and he'll join you on the adventure. During battles, Bomb-omb will hit one enemy after Mario attacks - then he'll fall asleep for the remainder of the battle.

Video Guide

Welcome to Autumn Mountain

When you reach Autumn Mountain, exit the tram and rescue the Toad on the floor near the right of the screen. You can now use the tram to travel to Overlook Mountain and Toad Town! You'll also want to rescue Sea Captain Toad by the stairs.

  • Toad Rescue #1: At the tram station, you'll find a crumpled-up Toad on the floor to the right, near the foreground. Use your Hammer to rescue the Toad. Rescuing this Toad lets you use the tram to go to Overlook Mountain and Toad Town.

  • Toad Rescue #2: In front of the steps that lead to the tram station there is a blue origami fish on the ground. Use your Hammer to rescue the Toad. This is Sea Captain Toad. You'll find Sea Captain Toad at the Toad Town port, though you can't use his boat yet.

The area next to the tram station has three Not-Bottomless Holes. Not-Bottomless Hole #1 is next to the tram station behind the fence in the foreground. Not-Bottomless Holes# 2,3, & 4 are surrounding the tree. Not-Bottomless Hole #4 is hard to see. It's behind the tree - in the corner of the wall and the fence. Hit the ?-Block to gain 100 coins. Then, walk to the right between the wall and the tram station to reach a hidden area behind the tram station. In the secret area, walk to the center of the coins on the ground. Then jump to hit a Hidden ?-Block containing a Shiny Hammer!

  • Toad Rescue #3: In the hidden area behind the tram station, there is a red leaf on the ground to the right of the square column. Hammer the leaf to rescue the Toad.

Go left to leave the area of the tram station. Bob-omb will jump into the chasm and walk to the foreground. Follow Bob-omb. After the cutscene, follow the path in the chasm up the mountain. As you continue, you'll encounter some origami soldiers like, Spinys and Paragoombas. Remember that the only boots that can damage spiked enemies are the Iron Boots. After passing the group of soldiers, you'll come across a dried-up lake. Walk up to the boat on the right to trigger a cutscene. Then, use the stairs next to it to reach the area above.

  • Toad Rescue #4: After going up the stairs by the boat, you'll find a crumpled-up Toad on the ground to the left of the sign. Hammer it to rescue the Toad.

There is an origami monkey to the left standing on a bunch of tuna cans. Getting close to it spooks it away, so ignore it for now and follow the path to the right. Go with Bob-omb to find the Water Vellumental Shrine in the distance. Get back on the path to come across the Water Vellumental Magic Circle on the ground. After Olivia's chat, use the stairs on the right.

At the bottom of the stairs, make a U-turn toward the background to walk through a gap between the stairs and the fence. This allows you to walk under the stairs and reach Collectible Treasure No.30 Fallen Leaves . Walk down to the area with the fields of tall grass. There are Toads in the grass that you need to hammer to rescue. You can use the images below, as well as your Toad Sensor, to help you find the spots. There are also origami soldiers walking among the tall grass. You could see them when they walk.

Secret Passage Beneath the Tall Grass

There is a secret path to the right side of the field. Walk over to a small secluded path to the left of the square column. Walk to the end to fall down to a cave below. Once inside the cave, walk to the right. You'll come across a Toad in the ground. Pull to rescue the Toad and receive a Max UP Heart +5 from the Toad. Continue walking to the right until you reach the end. Hammer the wall on the in front of you, to break the rock, destroy the Origami Spiny and get back outside. You'll need to fix Not-Bottomless Hole#5 to walk up the slope and reach the fields again.

  • ?-Block (Contains Fire Flower): Go to the fence that spans across the background of the field. To the left of the area with the small shrine (Wayside Water Vellumental Shrine), there is a gap in the fence. Walk through the gap to reach a ledge that leads to the ?-Block on the left.

Exiting the Tall Grass

Once you've rescued all the Toads, exit the fields on the right side, near the entrance to the bridge. When you come out of the grass, you'll discover that Bob-omb is missing. You need to go find Bom-omb to progress further. Enter the tall grass and follow the right side of the fence down toward the foreground. You can find Bob-omb sitting in the Friendship Plaza, chatting with a Shy Guy wearing a sombrero. While you're here, if you need to heal, use the bench near the ledge. Once Bob-omb is back with you, return to the entrance of the bridge.

Encounter on the Bridge

After making it out of the tall grass with Bob-omb, use the Save Block on your right. Then walk to the bridge. Bob-omb will get knocked off the bridge by the Macho Goomba on the other side. Defeat the Macho Goomba. You have the option to go find Bob-omb now, or continue exploring Autumn Mountain and find Bob-Omb later. For the purposes of this wiki guide, we'll go to Chestnut Valley and rescue Bob-omb now. Click here to continue the walkthrough and page to Chestnut Valley. Once we've completed Chestnut Valley, return here and continue in the section below.

Return to Autumn Mountain After Completing Chestnut Valley

Exiting Chestnut Valley brings you back to Autumn Mountain. Follow the rising pathway and fix Not-Bottomless Hole#6 on the right cliff wall. Continue going up the path until you reach the stairs. Don't use the stairs yet; instead, follow the fence toward the foreground. Mario will be obscured by the tree in the foreground. Walk toward the left/foreground drop into the area below. Here, fix Not-Bottomless Hole#7 on the cliff wall. Hit the ?-Block on the left to gain 1,000 coins. Return to the path by going to the right. Fix Not-Bottomless#8 on the ground before hopping back onto the path. Make your way to the stairs and rip off the tape to open the gate.

You're now back at Autumn Mountain, next to the bridge where you fought the Macho Goomba. Fix Not-Bottomless Hole #9 beside the gate you just used. Get back on the road that leads toward the background and up the stairs.

  • Toad Rescue #9: Hammer the tree to the left of the stairs to rescue the Toad.

Treasure and a New Office

There is a gap between the second set of stairs and the fence on the right. Walk behind the fence to reach a hidden area, where you'll find Collectible Treasure No.31 Toad Tram . Return to the road. Go up the third set of stairs and fix Not-Bottomless Hole#10 on the cliff wall. This will restore the Sensor Lab's Autumn Mountain Satellite Office. Enter. After rescuing the Toad, you'll unlock the ability to "fax travel" between this office and the lab in Picnic Road. You now have a quick way of returning to Toad Town (if you want) by Fax Traveling to the Picnic Road Lab and then using the orange work pipe to go from the sensor lab to Toad Town. Whenever you Fax Travel, you can press the B button to skip the faxing animation.

  • Toad Rescue #10: Inside the Sensor Lab's Autumn Mountain Satellite Office walk up to the console at the center of the room. Press and hold A to pull the Toad free. This unlocks Fax Traveling!

Get back on the road and continue traveling left. Battle and defeat the Origami Paragoomba on the road. You'll find Not-Bottomless Holes #11& 12 on the side of the mountain. The first hole is slightly obscured by the tree on the right. Continue following the road, and you'll reach the Water Vellumental Shrine sign and a Save Block next to it.

Get off the road and follow the stretch of land on the left. You'll encounter a couple of Origami Spinys. Defeating the second one earns you a Mushroom. Continue going left until you reach the area with the tree. Near the tree you'll find Not-Bottomless Holes#13, 14, &15 . Hit the ?-Block for 100 coins.

  • Toad Rescue #11: Behind the tree is a cave. Enter the cave to walk inside the mountain and exit to the area above behind a large boulder. Hammer the boulder from behind to make it fall in front of the wall with the colorful piece of tape. Jump on top of the boulder to pull the tape off and rescue the Toad.

A Few More Secrets Before the Shrine

Make your way back to the road. There's a small path behind the Save Block to the right of the bridge. Fix Not-Bottomless Hole#16 on the cliff wall to the right. Keep walking toward the background to follow the path until you reach a chest containing Collectible Treasure No.32 Confetti Bag . Then head back to the path. At the top of the path is a warp pipe that leads to another area next to the dried-up lake. If you take the pipe, you'll need to follow the road through Autumn Mountain back to reach the Water Vellumental Shrine. Taking the pipe leads to Not-Bottomless Hole#17 and some hidden Toads. Use the pipe to reach the secret area.

  • Toad Rescue #12: Before using the pipe, hammer the tree next to it to rescue a Toad.

Secret Area

After reaching the secret area, fix Not-Bottomless Hole#17 on the side of the mountain.

  • Toad Rescue #13: After using the pipe and reaching the secret area, hammer the origami dragonfly flying near the pipe.

  • Toad Rescue #14: From the secret area, drop onto the roof of the shack below. Walk to the left onto the small ledge. You'll see an origami bug crawl up the mountainside. Hammer the shrub near the center of the area to make a Magic Circle appear. Then use the 1,000-Fold arms to hit the bug and rescue the Toad.

Entering the Water Vellumental Shrine

After getting all the secrets from the secret area, follow the road to make it back to the Water Vellumental Shrine. Use the Save Block in front of the bridges that lead to the shrine. Go through the bridges. You can avoid the Origami Cheep Cheeps by waiting until after they jump over the bridge.

  • Toad Rescue #15: After crossing the first bridge, a red origami fish will jump onto the ground between the two bridges. Hammer the fish to rescue the Toad.

When you reach the door of the shrine, stand on one of the switches. After Bob-omb stands on the second switch, the door will open;you can enter the Water Vellumental Shrine. To continue along with this wiki guide, you can click here to go to the Water Vellumental Shrine page.

After Defeating the Water Vellumental

advertisement

When you exit the shrine after defeating the Water Vellumental, you need to go to the dried-up lake. You can quickly reach the lake by using the warp pipe you used earlier to reach the secret area. To get to the pipe, cross the bridges in front of the shrine. Then, use the path behind the Save Block and go up to reach the warp pipe on the right side. The secret area is right next to the lake. When you get out of the pipe, drop down to the area below. Follow the path around toward the foreground to reach the Magic Circle of the Water Vellumental. Press X to fill the lake.

After Filling the Lake

With the lake now filled, you can use the river to travel down the mountain and continue following the Blue Streamer. Before doing all that, though, take a detour to grab the remaining secrets at Autumn Mountain! Use the five boats floating on the shoreline to the left of the Magic Circle and walk around the stack of boats that's blocking the road to the left. As you go left, you'll find a chest on the water's edge. Open the chest to obtain Collectible Treasure No.33 Toad Researcher - that's 100% completion for treasure! To the left of the chest, fix Not-Bottomless Hole#18 on the ground in the middle of the road - that's 100% completion for Not-Bottomless Holes! Keep going left after fixing the Not-Bottomless Hole #18. Jump to hit the ?-Block at the end of the road to gain the Hurlhammer and 100% completion for ?-Blocks!

  • Toad Rescue #16: Hammer the tree to the left of the ?-Block to rescue a trio of Toads.

advertisement

  • Toad Rescue #17: To the left of the Water Vellumental Magic Circle, there are four boats stacked on top of each other, resembling a fort. Inside the fort, hammer the scarab that's crawling on the ground to rescue the Toad.

advertisement

  • Toad Rescue #18: Jump on top of the boat fort where you found the previous Toad, then jump on top of the large crates to the foreground. At the end of the L-shaped group of crates is a yellow origami leaf. Hammer the leaf to rescue the Toad.

  • Toad Rescue #19: Walk to the hidden area behind the tram station. Hammer the shrub to the right of the ring of coins to rescue the Toad.

Enough Secrets, Back to the Mission

After getting the secrets, it's time to move the story forward. Walk over to the boat dock on the right side of the river. Jump on the boat to trigger a cutscene. Turns out you need an oarman. Jump off the boat and go to the left toward the origami monkey dancing on the stack of tuna cans. Interacting with the monkey will cause it to run away and throw a can of tuna at you. [You have to trigger the cutscene on the boat before you can interact with the origami monkey.] Pick up the tuna can and go in the direction in which the origami monkey ran off to. Walk down the stairs and continue until you reach the area with the tall grass.

advertisement

This won't be as simple as just catching a monkey (if you consider that simple...). You'll need to do a couple of things before resolving the monkey situation. When you enter the tall grass fields, walk over to the white Zs coming out of the grass (circled in the image below). When you reach that spot, talk to sleeping Spike. Spike is looking for a party. Remember Friendship Plaza, where you found Bob-omb speaking with a Shy Guy wearing a sombrero? Well, that's where this guy needs to go. Walk to the foreground and stay toward the right side of the fields. You'll see the entrance to Friendship Plaza near the bottom edge of the fields.

When you get Spike to the party, you'll learn that the guy with the can opener is missing -- gotta go find that guy! Back into the tall grass fields... From the Friendship Plaza, follow the fence going left. Continue following the fences and you'll reach an area near a large square column. Approach the shuffling grass to encounter a group of enemies. After the wave battle, walk closer to the area until you can speak with the guy in the tall grass. Escort the can opener guy to the party at Friendship Plaza. After everyone is together, speak to the can opener guy again to have him open your can of tuna.

Equipped with your open tuna can, you can now walk over to the small shrine on the top right corner of the tall grass field. Walk up to the front of the small shrine, and you'll be prompted to use your can of tuna. When the origami monkey starts eating the tuna, hammer it to rescue the Toad. That's the oarman, and 100% of the Toads rescued in Autumn Mountain (if you followed along with this guide).
